Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal has concluded his arguments in the Supreme Court regarding the Constitutional crisis arising in Maharashtra after the regime change in July, 2022. Appearing for the Uddhav Thackeray camp before the Constitution Bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice MR Shah, Justice Krishna Murari, Justice Hima Kohli and Justice P.S. Narasimha, Sibal said in order to maintain the institutional integrity, it was important that constitutional processes survived in the country. He argued that the Governor’s actions in the political crisis have been unconstitutional. Sibal said if the Apex Court upheld this, it would be the death knell of what has been upheld since the 1950s. Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed the development on micro-blogging Twitter. The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the elevation of Venkatachari Lakshminarayanan on January 19, 2023, along with the proposal to appoint Justice L. Victoria Gowri to the Madras High Court Bench. The Madras High Court has been working at a strength of 57 Judges as against a sanctioned strength of 75, with 18 vacancies. With the addition of Justice Lakshminarayanan, the number of sitting Madras High Court Judges will rise to 58. A second case has been registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation against the former Justice of Allahabad High Court Justice SN Shukla for allegedly acquiring disproportionate assets worth ₹2.55 crore during his tenure as a judge. The first information report (FIR) was lodged on Wednesday when the Deputy superintendent of police,CBI filed a written complaint. As per the FIR the prima-facie ,the Justice allegedly acquired assets worth ₹2,54,56,786 in the name of his wife, Suchita Tiwari and brother of first wife, Saideen Tiwari during the period from April 1, 2014 to December 6, 2019. This is not the sole case on the justice but  the second corruption case against the judge. The judge is bene earlier booked by CBI for accepting bribes from Prasad Education Trust-run Glocal Medical College in return for favourable verdict. The appointment of three lawyers as additional judges of the Allahabad High Court has been notified by the Central Government today. The lawyers appointed as additional judges are: Prashant Kumar Manjive Shukla Arun Kumar Singh Deshwal The Supreme Court Collegium on 19 January 19 had recommended 9 names for elevation. The other six names were cleared earlier this month. The Allahabad High Court is currently functioning with 96 judges as against its sanctioned strength 160, with 64 vacancies. Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud announced on Thursday that the Supreme Court has introduced neutral citation for all of its judgments passed so far. Making the announcement in the open court today, the CJI said the neutral citation would be for more than 30,000 verdicts delivered by the Apex Court, to be carried out in three phases. As per the CJI, the first tranche, which includes judgments starting from 2014 till present, has already been completed. The second tranche would be from 1995 to 2013 and the third from 1950 to 1994, he added. CJI Chandrachud further said that the Court was employing machine learning tools to translate its judgments from English to vernacular languages. He said sometimes, literal translations could create difficulty. For example, “leave granted” may literally translate to “avakash prapt ho gaya”. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has granted interim relief to Zee News Anchor Deepak Chaurasia in a POCSO case, while imposing cost of Rs two lakh on him for wasting the valuable time and energy of courts as well as the prosecution. The Single-Judge Bench of Justice Jagmohan Bansal directed Chaurasia to appear before the trial court on March 3 and furnish fresh bail bonds. The High Court took note of the fact that Chaurasia was working on a senior position with a national news channel. Neither the prosecution, nor the complainant, have apprehended the petitioner trying to flee from justice, it added. It said the Right of personal liberty granted by Article 21 was one of the most pious and important fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution.
