The Supreme Court has been approached by the Central government for the  extension of tenure of incumbent Director of Enforcement Directorate (ED) Sanjay Kumar Mishra who has been asked by the top court to demit office by July 31. The matter was mentioned before Justice BR Gavai-led bench by the Solicitor General of India seeking urgent listing. The Court agreed to the request and agreed to hear the plea on Thursday at 3.30 pm. A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justices BR Gavai, Vikram Nath and Sanjay Karol had, on July 11 this year, struck down the earlier extension granted to Mishra on the ground that the same was in violation of the Supreme Court’s 2021 judgment. A Delhi court on Wednesday awarded four-year sentence to former Parliamentarian Vijay Darda and his son Devendra Darda in a case related to irregularities in the allocation of a coal block in Chhattisgarh The court further sentenced JLD Yavatmal Energy Pvt Ltd director Manoj Kumar Jayaswal to four-year jail sentence. M/s JLD Yavatmal was fined Rs 50 lakh. Besides, former coal secretary H.C. Gupta and two other officials K.S. Kropha and K.C. Samaria were senetnced to three-year jail imprisonment. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought response from the Manipur government on steps taken to prevent human rights violations in the state, as well as relief and rehabilitation measures for the victims of violence. Noting that in most of the matters relating to violation of human rights due to continued violence in Manipur, the Action Taken Reports (ATRs) sought by the state government were awaited yet, the Commission directed the state government to expedite ATRs awaited in specific complaints. The rights body further directed the state government to submit a report within two weeks on action taken by the concerned authority in the series of incidents that kept on happening for a considerable period and the disturbances, which continued for a pretty long time. The Supreme Court on Tuesday came down heavily on the Union of India and the State of Nagaland for not implementing 33 percent reservation to women in urban municipalities under Part-IXA of the Constitution. The Bench led by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul gave ‘one last chance’ to both the Central and state governments to clear their stand on the matter. The Bench said that the Centre and the state cannot shy away from their responsibility under the garb of special status of Nagaland. The top court of the country further directed the Union government to ensure that the law of the land prevailed in the hill state, without affecting its personal and customary laws and also without affecting the Special Status of Nagaland. The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed fresh proceedings against Kerala Transport Minister Antony Raju, who was booked for alleged tampering of evidence during the trial of a drugs case in 1990. The Bench of Justice C.T. Ravikumar and Justice Sanjay Kumar issued notice on two special leave petitions, which had challenged the Kerala High Court order quashing the criminal case against Raju. On March 10, 2023, a Single-Judge Bench of the High Court had quashed the criminal case on technical reason that as per Section 195(1)(b) CrPC, cognisance cannot be taken on a police charge sheet in a case relating to fabrication of evidence in a court proceeding. However, the High Court noted that the offence was of a serious nature, which interfered with the administration of justice.
