Madras High Court lawyers follow suit with Gujarat, Telangana counterparts, oppose Supreme Court Collegium’s transfer decision

Following in the footsteps of their counterparts in Gujarat and Telangana, the Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHCAA) has raised ‘strong objection’ to the Supreme Court Collegium’s decision to transfer judges from one High Court to another.  In a letter written to Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud on Friday, the organisation opposed transfer of Madras High Court Acting Chief Justice T Raja to the Rajasthan High Court, alleging that such proposals looked like the person was being disincentivised for being an efficient and decent judicial officer, holding the highest post in the state judiciary.  As per MHCAA President G. Mohana Krishnan, since September 22, 2022, when Justice Raja took over as the Acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court, he has maintained the highest decorum. Punjab and Haryana High Court disposes of PIL seeking phasing-out of alcohol sale in Punjab

The Punjab and Haryana High Court disposed of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed seeking phasing-out of the sale of alcohol in the State of Punjab based on certain reports obtained by it. The PIL has been filed by one legal trust. After arguing at length, the Petitioner prayed for and is permitted by the High Court to approach the respondent-authorities by filing a detailed representation as it has not done so till date. Avinit Avasthi, Assistant Advocate General, Punjab, submitted before the High Court that in case the petitioner does so, the respondent-authorities shall look into the matter and take a decision thereon in accordance with law. In view of the aforesaid, the Division Bench of Chief Justice Ravi Shanker Jha and Justice Arun Palli disposed of the Petition.
